Legislators Advance Minimum Wage Increase
August 20, 2006

An increase in the minimum wage appears all but certain as Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger meets with Democratic leaders to work on a compromise increase.

Democratic legislators are moving a bill which would increase the minimum wage by a minimum of $1 per hour and require annual cost-of living increases. The governor has vetoed similar bills the past two years.

This year, however, the Governor has said he supports an increase in the minimum wage as long as it is not tied to a cost of living index. The question is whether legislators and the Governor can agree upon an amount and timeline.
